Chapter 8
Monday rolled around, and I was still thinking about my rendezvous with Shelia and her offer. A tiny part of me felt guilty for taking her money, just for providing a “service” that I truly enjoyed providing, but then I reminded myself that I had a pretty little mouth to feed, with a mother who could be hell in heels, and I got over it. At least I’m not back to my old ways, takin’ money from females and playin’ with their feelings, I reasoned. Besides, I was sure I’d never hook up with Shelia again, because I hadn’t accepted her offer.
My third appointment for the morning was in Madison, just two blocks over from my parents’ place. The front door opened as soon as I pulled up to the curb in front of the two-story home. I killed the engine and climbed out, then strolled up the driveway to the front door.
There was a slender female with a caramel complexion standing in the doorway, dressed in an ankle-length skirt, flats, and a ruffled white blouse. Her hair was secured in a single braid, and around her neck was a chain with a silver cross on it. After greeting me and introducing herself as Lucy, she invited me into her home. “This way,” she said, leading me upstairs.
I stepped up the mahogany staircase behind her, admiring the family pictures and religious paintings that lined the wall along the way. There were pictures of Lucy with a dark-skinned man; I assumed he was her husband.
“Here we are.” She smiled, looking back at me. She pushed the door open and led me into what appeared to be a home office or study. Inside the room was a large, wooden desk and a leather executive chair, as well as wall-to-wall bookshelves, but there was no visible sign of a TV, convertor, or even an outlet.
“I’m sorry,” I stated, looking around the room. “We have you down for a repair, not an installation.” I assumed my orders were wrong and that Lucy wanted to add services rather than have her current service repaired.
“Your information is right,” she said timidly. She slipped her hand into the front pocket of her skirt, then pulled out three crisp bills and handed them to me.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t take tips,” I said naïvely.
“Shelia referred you,” she said shyly.
“She did?” I questioned, shaking my head. I didn’t know whether to be flattered to know that I had put it down so good with Shelia, or pissed that she was making me out to be a man-whore.
“Yes.” She stared at me with her eyes wide, waiting on my response.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but I just…I can’t.”
She reached in her other pocket and pulled out two more $100 bills. Her eyes seemed to be glistening, and I hoped she wouldn’t erupt into tears.
“It’s not because of the money,” I explained. “It’s…well, don’t you have a husband?”
“I do,” she said, toying with the cross around her neck, “but there are some things he doesn’t do, some things he doesn’t…allow.
